This Is Your Life

This is something I drew during training a few months ago (I forgot I had this photo):

My Life

This was something the teacher taught us about work, but I think it is true for life in general. There are some things we can control, there are some things we can influence (but cannot control), and there are a lot of things we cannot control or influence. If we get upset by things we cannot control or influence, who’s fault is it? If we don’t get upset by things we cannot control or influence, do we not gain a more peaceful mind?

P.S. The kanji below were just practice for the Heisig method. I often do that at work when I am bored. ;p

  1. Hi Doug, if the above interests you, you might be interested to check out the teachings of the Stoics, especially Epictetus. A very good book on the subject is Pierre Hadot’s ‘The Inner Citadel’. Here’s a summary though: http://www.iep.utm.edu/epictetu/ (‘To maintain our prohairesis (moral character) in the proper condition – the successful accomplishment of this being necessary and sufficient for eudaimonia (‘happiness’) – we must understand what is eph’ hêmin (‘in our power’ or ‘up to us’; see Discourses 1.22.9–16). ‘)
