With all the talk of war lately, I found this interesting story on the BBC recently. It talks about the Kosovo War from 1998-1999, and how a group of British soldiers led by James Blunt refused to attack Russian soldiers even though they were ordered to. The most important part of the story is:
“And after a couple of days the Russians there said: ‘Hang on we have no food and no water. Can we share the airfield with you?’.”
If the British soldiers had attacked, they would have gained the airfield, but lost potential friends and possibly started a war between Russia and the West. James Blunt did something brave though, and chose peace over war. Because of it, he’s a much greater hero now.
I think we can all learn from this example.
