Friday Poetry: Love as an open flame

Poem #600 of the Kokin Wakashu, translation by Professor Rudd:

夏虫を
何か言ひけむ
心から
我も思ひに
もえぬべらなり

Summer insects fly
Too near the flame
What name can I give them
I who yearn within my heart and must
Burn with hopeless passion.

–Ōshikōchi no Mitsune (859-925)
