Confucianism: Education Matters

Been re-reading a book of writings by the ancient Confucian scholar Xunzi (荀子 314-217 BC).  I particularly like this quote:

“Children born among the Han or Yue people of the south and among the Mo barbarians of the north cry with the same voice at birth, but as they grow older they follow different customs. Education causes them to differ.”

This is an important theme in Confucian thought, not just for Xunzi: all humans are born with the same basic qualities, but environment and education determine one’s path in life.
