Buddhism 102: Introduction

In this course, we’ll explore the broad Buddhist tradition called the Mahayana or “great vehicle”, a tradition that extended northward from India and then eventually reached East Asia where it flourished for centuries before spreading into the West. Buddhism in places like China, Tibet, Mongolia, Japan, Korea and Vietnam are all part of the Mahayana tradition. Buddhism in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Sri Lanka are all part of the Theravada tradition or “Way of the Elders”.

Chances are you’ve been practicing Mahayana Buddhism and not even known it.  This course will help define what Mahayana Buddhism is, what traditions it includes, and what are the main features of Mahayana Buddhism.
